Mourinho quits UEFA board after suspension

AS Roma coach Joss Mourinho has immediately withdrawn from the UEFA Football Board. His decision comes a day after the European Football Association suspended him from four European matches for misconduct towards referee Anthony Taylor.

"I thank you for the invitation to join the UEFA Football Board, but I regret to inform you that I will be relinquishing my involvement with immediate effect," Mourinho wrote in a letter to UEFA director and former AC Milan chairman Zvonimir Boban.

The UEFA Football Board is a group of former players and trainers who share their ideas to improve football.

"The conditions that I believed so strongly in when I joined no longer apply," said Mourinho. "Therefore, I feel compelled to make this decision. I kindly ask you to forward my decision to President Aleksander Ceferin."

Mourinho raged against Taylor after the lost Europa League final against Sevilla at the end of May. "You are a disgrace", the Portuguese trainer shouted, among other things, in the parking garage of the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Mourinho accused the British referee of blowing his whistle against his team. Taylor and his family were later attacked at Budapest airport by AS Roma supporters.
