Tenision in the stands between French players’ families after Euro exit
Tactical misunderstandings, blames between players, tensions among relatives are what defined France's exit from the Euro 2020.
The Les Bleus unraveled in the match against Switzerland after leading 3-1 till the 81st minute to end full time on 3-3. Kylian Mbappe's crucial penalty miss saw France crash out on shootout from the Round of 16.
According to French news broadcaster RMC Sport, tensions between the families watching in the stadium in Bucharest started when Veronique Rabiot - the mother and former agent of Adrien - and people close to her exchanged words with the Pogba family.
At the full time whistle she turned her attention to Mbappe and his family, asking the forward's family if they could tell their son to be less arrogant. She also began criticising some of the journalists nearby for the way they were apparently fawned upon the PSG player.
The clashes in the stands last night during the Switzerland game, between Veronique Rabiot (Adrien's mum) and the Pogba and Mbappé families is something else! Her telling Mbappé's dad to tell off his son because he is too arrogant has to be right up there in terms of clashes!! Julien Laurens (@LaurensJulien) June 29, 2021
"The clashes in the stands last night during the Switzerland game, between Veronique Rabiot (Adrien's mum) and the Pogba and Mbappe families is something else! Her telling Mbappé's dad to tell off his son because he is too arrogant has to be right up there in terms of clashes," an ESPN reporter tweeted about the incidents.
Mbappe said France were "incredibly sad" after exiting the tournament and that his miss would keep him awake at night.
"I'm sorry about this penalty. I wanted to help the team but I failed," Mbappe wrote on Instagram.
"It's going to be hard to sleep after this, but unfortunately these are the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.
"The most important (thing) will be to get back up again even stronger for future commitments. Congratulations and good luck to the Swiss team."
