Bangladesh go down 19-0 against China
Bangladesh Under-21 women's hockey team began their Women's Junior Hockey Asia Cup campaign on the wrong foot as they went down 19-0 against powerhouse China in their Pool A opener in Muscat, Oman today.
It was a significant mismatch on paper and the result had every reflection of that. Bangladesh, who are playing in the tournament for the first time, expectedly, were rattled by their superior counterparts in their first serving of international competition. It is noteworthy that the women in red and green only started competing on the international stage in 2019 and to this day, have no regular domestic competitions.
China are ranked sixth in the world, while Bangladesh are yet to be even ranked amongst the 82 teams.
China took only two minutes to open the floodgates and then struck in regular intervals, going up 6-0 in the first quarter before adding four more in the second. After resumption, China netted nine more goals. Guoting Hao netted five goals, the highest in the match, while Lihang Wang scored four. Thirteen goals were scored from open play.
Bangladesh will play their second match against India tomorrow.
