Baki falls after strong start
Bangladesh's Commonwealth Games silver medallist Abdullahel Baki's Olympic journey petered out at the qualification stage after a fine start in the qualification round of the men's 10m air rifle event at the Rio Olympic Games today. He finished 25 th among 50 competitors with a final score of 621.2, 3.6 shy of his best of 624.8.
At the Deodoro Shooting Complex in Rio de Janeiro, Baki was initially very much in the zone, staying in the top eight for half the round. Hopes of qualification to the final round were raised among Bangladeshi fans -- of which Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus was one – as the top eight would make the cut.
Professor Yunus watched Baki's performance and expressed great pleasure and shook hands with him after the event.
Of the eight to qualify Niccolo Campriani took top spot with a score of 630.2, followed by Russian Vladimir Maslennikov (629), Croatian Petar Gorša (628), Serhiy Kulish (627)and Oleh Tsarkov (626.2) of Ukraine, Hungarian Peter Sidi (625.9), Abhinav Bindra of India (625.7) and Illia Charheika of Belarus (625.5).
