Shakib strikes late but SL finish strong on Day 2

Sri Lanka lost two wickets in the final session of Day 2 of their second Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur today but the visitors still remain in a strong position. 

Shakib Al Hasan scalped a wicket late on the day before Sri Lanka reached 143 for two at Stumps, with skipper Dimuth Karunaratne unbeaten on a 127-ball 70 and nightwatchman Kasun Rajitha yet to open his account. Sri Lanka still trail by 222 runs. 

Meanwhile, Bangladesh might have to pay a penalty for slow over-rate as 10 overs were lost today. Teams lose one point for being one over short in the ICC Test Championship. England, so far, have lost 10 points in the championship due to slow over rates.  

Late in the final session today, Shakib, introduced to the attack after a while, had Kusal Mendis (11 off 49) trapped in front with a typical delivery that went in with the arm to break a growing 44-run second-wicket stand between Mendis and Karunaratne. 

Before that, after Sri Lanka had gone to Tea unscathed, Ebadot Hossain gave the Tigers the crucial breakthrough when he broke a 95-run opening stand by having Oshada Fernando (57 off 91) caught at slip.

For Sri Lanka, skipper Karunaratne did bring up his 29th Test fifty but survived a few close calls on the day. In fact, he survived an LBW after umpire denied an appeal only to later see that had Bangladesh taken a review, the Sri Lankan skipper would have been dismissed. Karunaratne also survived a few tough dropped catches.
