Liton breaks record despite defeat against India
Bangladesh batter Liton Das's stellar year continued as the right-hander managed to become the highest-ever-run-getter for Bangladesh in a calendar year following a flying 27-ball 60 in Bangladesh's Super 12 loss against India in the ongoing T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.
The prolific run-getter has made 2022 his own scoring a combined 1693 runs across all three formats at an average of 42.32, including 12 fifties and three centuries as he surpassed Mushfiqur Rahim's record of 1657 runs in 2018, which featured his 219* in a Test match against Zimbabwe at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Opening the innings on Wednesday, Liton, who was 24 runs away from the record, smashed seven fours and two sixes to score his eighth T20I fifty which took Bangladesh to a commanding position after the first seven overs while chasing 185.
But the batter met an unfortunate end as he slipped and fell shy of his ground in pursuit of completing a second run as KL Rahul's throw from the deep mid-wicket hit the stumps.
The 28-year-old will have ample opportunity to extend his tally as Bangladesh still have one more match left in the T20 World Cup against Pakistan on Sunday before they head back home to take on India in December.
