Tigers staying positive

The news that there's a high chance of today's match being washed out and the points being split spread joy across Bangladeshis both here and back home. The social media for one was filled with several opinions on the issue, most of which was of the chance for the Tigers to gain one valuable point.

How much this potential point can help the Tigers' aim of securing a quarterfinal berth is still uncertain. A majority of the fans however had already begun welcoming it since yesterday.

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza however, has a completely different point of view compared to most of the fans. The 31-year-old skipper said that it would be 'negative' to hope for only one point.

"We are preparing to play a full match. We don't want to play a curtailed game as forming team combination becomes harder. We are disappointed with the rain but preparation difficulties have been there for both sides.

“But they are used to playing in these conditions and missing a few days wouldn't matter for them. We needed at least some time to bat and bowl in the nets here. We definitely want to play. It would be some experience playing against this Australian side,” said Mashrafe at the pre-match press conference.

“If we can play good cricket in here, definitely it will help in the future matches against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. So it is disappointing for However, we cannot stop the rain and if we get one point, we won't mind that," he added.

It is a common belief that weaker sides get more of an opportunity of an upset in curtailed matches. However, Bangladesh's performance in T20 cricket suggests otherwise. The other aspect is that Bangladesh's batsmen can face a stiff challenge as the pitch, which has been under cover for the last three days, will have moisture and make pace bowling a lot more difficult to face.

Regardless, Mashrafe believes that the Tigers have nothing to lose even if a match does take place.

The Bangladesh team management advised all the players to get ready for a full match, despite the fact that the weather forecast predicts heavy rainfall.

The ICC too, through a press release, stated that a delayed start would take place if necessary, with at least 20 overs per side.

However, all those statements hold no value when compared to what the Gabba curator Kevin Mitchell said: “I am not expecting any play.”
