Millenia-old wooden shipbuilding, boat-making industry of Chattogram
In the Middle Ages, Chattogram was one of the major hubs for the wooden shipbuilding industry. Ships from Chattogram used to be exported to places like Egypt, Turkey, and Germany.
Towards the end of the 19th century when metal ships started replacing the traditional wooden ships, this industry started to disappear.
However, the traditional designs can still be seen in the small-scale construction of large sea fishing boats in Chattogram.
These wooden fishing boats are built in the north of Karnaphuli river in Kalurghat, Char Patharghata and surrounding areas.
Watch today's Inside Bangladesh to find out more about these fishing boats.
