MindMatters hosts ‘A Panel Discussion on Postpartum Depression’
On September 22, MindMatters, an organisation that aims to spread awareness on mental health and mental healthcare hosted 'A Panel Discussion on Postpartum Depression,' at Banani, in association with Gourmet Bazaar.
In today's society, several mental disorders are steadily but surely coming out of the shadows. Yet postpartum depression (PPD), a condition known to affect parents after childbirth, stands as an alien concept to many. The panel focused on initiating transparent and open-minded dialogue on PPD by exploring the many facets of the disorder and how it affects people. Especially young mothers and fathers who are under the stress of becoming new parents often experience PDD, as they suddenly have to face multiple major changes in their lives. The evening was spent with panellists Farin Daulah, a mother of two and co-founder and managing director of Yellow Brick Road, Nisha Alam Rahman, a mother of two and an English Literature teacher, Asifur Rahman Khan, a father of two and a communication professional and Dr Ashique Selim, a consultant psychiatrist and managing director of Physical Health & Wellness Center (PHWC).
Ashna Chowdhury, founder of Thrive Women, moderated the discussion. She spoke to the panellists about their personal experiences with PPD and how they overcame the struggles associated with it. Dr Ashique Selim spoke about the different symptoms of the disorder, while providing the attendees with valuable insights on how they can identify these symptoms and seek help. However, the discussions at the event could have been more in-depth. The event came to an end after the panellists took some questions from the audience on PPD.
