Raihan Alamgir Lukan’s initiatives to promote Green Architecture
Green Architecture is an approach to building that minimises the harmful effects of construction projects on human health and the environment. The 'green' architect attempts to safeguard air, water, and earth by choosing eco-friendly building materials and construction practices. In recent years, Bangladesh has made rapid improvements in Green Architecture, with 13 LEED Platinum certified factories in the apparel industry. Among these, three are designed by successful architect Raihan Alamgir Lukan.
Lukan was born in a family of architects. His father, the late AJM Alamgir, was one of the most prominent architects of Bangladesh. He founded Archetype LTD in 1988. Lukan's mother Selina Afroze, an architect herself, is the chairman of Archetype LTD. After completing his higher education from abroad, Lukan joined Archetype LTD in 2011. Today, he is the managing director of the firm. He has previously worked with some renowned architecture companies. Archetype LTD is the firm behind establishments such as Jamuna Future Park, International School Dhaka, DPS School and many others. Currently, the firm has 22 employees.
The projects Archetype LTD works with uses artificial intelligence to sustain energy. Predominantly, Lukan is working on projects in the RMG sector, establishing new factories.
One of his ongoing projects is Bangladesh Green Building Academy in Dhamrai, which is expected to be completed in 2023. Starting from human waste recycling to cultivation of fish and vegetables using a hydroponic system, the building promotes many eco-friendly practices.
Recently, Lukan received acclaim for Columbia Washing Plant, an LEED Platinum certified establishment in Gazipur. He encourages the total utilisation of spaces to accommodate the growing population of the world. "I believe that the residential buildings in Dhaka should be more environmentally conscious, and I dream of a country that has cleaner air and more greenery," said Lukan.
