SAARC officials meet to set agenda for bringing down tariffs

KATHMANDU, July 30 : The main South Asian regional group on Tuesday took new steps toward eliminating tariffs to boost trade in the region, reports AFP. Senior officials from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries began a three-day meeting here to set an agenda for bringing down tariffs. The inter-governmental group on trade liberalisation will make recommendations to the governments of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka on how to free up trade. FM returns

Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad returned home yesterday ending his five-day visit to China where he signed a 24 million US dollars interest free loan for the construction of a convention centre in the capital to host the 13th NAM summit scheduled to be held here in 2001, reports BSS.

 

During his stay in Beijing Azad called on Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji and other Chinese leaders.

 

He held bilateral discussions with his counterpart Tang Jia Xuan.

Draft of Dhaka-KL science, technology cooperation accord okayed

The cabinet yesterday approved draft agreement on science and technology cooperation between Bangladesh and Malaysia, reports BSS. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting held at the Cabinet Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad. According to the agreement, the two countries will exchange scientific information, documents and researchers. Ministers, state ministers in charge of different ministries attended the meeting.
