SAARC officials meet to set agenda for bringing down tariffs

KATHMANDU, July 30 : The main South Asian regional group on Tuesday took new steps toward eliminating tariffs to boost trade in the region, reports AFP. Senior officials from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries began a three-day meeting here to set an agenda for bringing down tariffs. The inter-governmental group on trade liberalisation will make recommendations to the governments of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka on how to free up trade. Dutch envoy calls on Khaleda

Ambassador of the Netherlands in Dhaka Dick CB Den Haas called on BNP Chairperson and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Khaleda Zia at the Minto Road official residence yesterday, reports UNB.

They discussed bilateral and international matters of common concern. The present political and economic situation of Bangladesh also came up during their discussion.

Gujral leaves Dhaka

Indian Prime Minister I K Gujral yesterday left for New Delhi after attending the 3-nation business summit in Dhaka, reports UNB.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina saw the Indian Prime Minister off at the Zia International Airport. Ministers, diplomats, chiefs of three services and senior civil and military officials were present at the airport.

Gujral arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday on a two-day state visit addressed the inaugural session of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan business summit, and held talks with Bangladesh leaders including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Nasim calls on Gujral

Post and Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Nasim called on visiting Indian Prime Minister IK Gujral at his hotel suite yesterday, reports UNB.

They discussed various issues of mutual interests and hoped that the three-nation business summit will expand the area of cooperation and benefits of the people of two countries.
