The prospect of having another major metro rail route in Dhaka looks bright as financing for the construction of the southern route of Mass Rapid Transit Line-5 has been confirmed.
The government is going to construct another metro rail line, whose construction cost per km is some 35 percent higher than that of a similar metro line.
The metro rail authorities and the Roads and Highways Department are in a tussle over the route alignment of MRT-5 (north), physical work on which is expected to start in July.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has showed its intention to mobilise $3.5 billion along with a co-financier for the implementation of the southern route of the Dhaka Mass Rapid Development Project’s MRT Line-5, officials said.
The metro rail authorities are going to start the construction work for two more lines next year.
