Apple has launched its latest line of iPhone 15, continuing its tradition of yearly upgrades to its popular lines of devices.

The tech giant introduced the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus with the notable addition of the Dynamic Island, a feature carried over from last year's iPhone 14 Pro. Those who were expecting a complete design overhaul may be disappointed, as this year's model retains much of the look and feel of its predecessor.

The iPhone 15 sticks to its 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina display, identical to the iPhone 14. The key new feature, the Dynamic Island, is a pill-shaped cutout that first debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. This cutout offers a new way to view notifications and interact with apps without unlocking the device. The new iPhone 15 also gets a 48-megapixel camera upgrade.

High-end features for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are made of titanium and come with a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen respectively. Both are powered by the A17 Pro chip, which Apple claims has the fastest performance of any smartphone and can even challenge some high-end PCs.

One of the standout features is the Action Button, which replaces the traditional ringer switch on the left side of the device. This new button can be customised to run shortcuts, activate accessibility features, open the camera, turn on the flashlight, and more.

The Pros also have Super Retina XDR displays with ProMotion, and support both the always-on display and the new StandBy mode in iOS 17. Additionally, these are the first iPhones to support 10Gbps transfer speeds, thanks to their USB-C ports.

The "most Pro iPhone ever"

Greg Joswiak, Apple's marketing chief, described the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max as "our best and most Pro iPhone ever." These devices feature what Apple claims are its best cameras to date, equivalent to seven distinct lenses. The upgraded 48-megapixel camera is engineered for better low-light photos, reduced lens flare, and utilises Apple's AI systems to take full-res HEIF photos.

Users can change their default lens and shoot at multiple focal lengths — 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm — within the main camera. These iPhones also offer up to 5x optical zoom, extending to a 120mm focal length, the most Apple has ever provided.

Video capabilities

On the video side, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max allow users to shoot 4K60 ProRes videos. In a first for iPhones, users can also shoot directly to an external drive via the USB-C port, provided they have the appropriate cable. Apple has also introduced the capability to capture "spatial videos," a type of 3D content, signalling the company's vision of the iPhone 15 Pro as a professional tool for creators and filmmakers.
