Unicef aids for Rohingyas arrive

The first consignment of Unicef's emergency supplies for Rohingya refugee children, that contains 100 tonnes of supplies, has arrived in Dhaka.

A cargo plane arrived from Copenhagen with the supplies that include water purifying tablets, hygiene kits and sanitary materials, said a press release of the Unicef.

The supplies will provide urgently-needed assistance to the estimated quarter of a million Rohingya child refugees, the press release said.

"Ensuring that children and families have safe water for drinking and washing is absolutely essential in order to protect them against diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases," said Edouard Beigbeder, Unicef representative in Bangladesh.

Another consignment of materials consisting of –bags, tents, childhood development kits, family hygiene and dignity kits, tarpaulin and nutrition materials – are also on its way.

Unicef has also sought USD $ 7.3 million in additional funding for its work in Bangladesh over the next three months. It said additional fund will be necessary with the growing population of refugees.
