UN chief slams Bamako shooting

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has deplored the Bamako shooting incident in Mali on May 25, during which a Bangladeshi peacekeeper of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was killed and another injured.

Ban called on the Malian authorities to swiftly and thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice, according to a statement of spokesman for the secretary-general on May 28.

The UN Secretary General expressed his sincere condolences to the family of the victim and the Government of Bangladesh, and also wished a speedy recovery to the injured peacekeeper.

He reaffirmed the willingness of the MINUSMA to cooperate closely with Malian authorities in this effort.

Sepoy Nilkanto Hajong died on the spot and Sepoy Sirajul Islam sustained bullet injuries after the militants ambushed a jeep of Bangladesh transport contingent in Bamako on May 25.
