Eden College BCL president among 10 injured in clashes
Eden Mohila College unit Chhatra League president came under attack today (September 25, 2022) while addressing a press conference over allegations of seat trade and extortion.
Eyewitnesses said Tamanna Jasmine Riva was holding a press conference along with some of her followers at the campus in the evening to reply to allegations brought against her.
At the press conference, Riva said the allegations against her came from those who were unable to get their expected posts in the committee, announced in May this year, and since then they were trying to create controversy against the top leaders.
At one point, some leaders and activists of the same unit, who were chanting slogans against her and the General Secretary Razia Sultana, surrounded them and beat up the organisers of the press conference.
At least 10, including Riva, were injured in the clash that broke out. They were then taken to several hospitals of the capital.
Earlier, at noon, a group of Chhatra League leaders — led by 25 leaders with a post in the existing committee — held another press conference.
They brought some serious allegations, including being forced to do unethical work by blackmailing female students, trading of hall seats, extortion, and torture against the president and secretary.
"If the BCL central committee won't take organisational action against them, we will resign altogether," said Marzia Urmi, vice president of the same committee.
She demanded justice for Jannatul Ferdowsi, another vice president, who was attacked by the BCL activists in the presence of the president and secretary on Saturday night.
Marzia Urmi said, Jannatul talked with media several times and gave statements about the unethical practices of the president-secretary, which is why she was tortured that night.
The Eden College Chhatra League became controversial from the very first day of the announcement of the committee. On May 13, after the announcement of the new committee, clashes broke out between two groups.
