SUST protest: Students thank PM for bearing expenses of their treatment
The agitating students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for taking care of all the medical expenses of the students injured in the police attack during the movement, and those who fell ill during the hunger strike demanding the vice chancellor's resignation.
At a press briefing held on the university campus this afternoon, the students said that arrangements have been made to send an injured student, Sourav, to Dhaka for better treatment.
A spokesperson for the protesters at the briefing said with the directive of the government, the education minister has promised to meet their main and other demands. "We all students are grateful to the prime minister."
The student said that the education minister has expressed interest in coming to SUST for discussions.
"We are also looking forward to discussing with her (Dipu Moni) about our demands and the various issues that the university is facing," said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson also expressed hope that all the given assurances, including the resignation of the VC, would be fulfilled as soon as possible.
The SUST students resumed their protest yesterday, following the end of their hunger strike that began on January 19 demanding the VC's resignation.
On January 26, 28 Sust students ended their hunger strike after 163 hours following the requests of former professors Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and Yasmeen Haque.
On January 13, a group of students began demonstrations alleging that their dormitory's provost, Zafrin Ahmed Liza, misbehaved with a student.
On January 16, police fired rubber bullets and hurled sound grenades on the agitating students, triggering a clash that left over 30 students injured.
The students that night started their demonstration demanding the resignation of VC Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed.
