Rajshahi University acting proctor removed
Rajshahi University authorities have removed acting proctor Assistant Professor Leaket Ali from his post following the death of a student in campus last night.
A fourth-year student, Mahmud Habib Himel, of graphic design, crafts and history of the university's arts department, was crushed to death and another injured as a truck ran over a motorcycle on the campus last night, reports our RU correspondent quoting Pradip Kumar Pandey, public relation officer of the university.
The decision was taken in response to the demands of agitating students over the Himel's death.
The announcement was made by RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar in the presence of students in front of his residence at around 1:30am today.
According to eyewitnesses, a truck carrying construction materials ran over the motorcycle around 8:45pm near Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall, leaving Himel dead on the spot and critically injuring Rimel.
As the news spread, agitating students torched four vehicles including the truck and had been demonstrating in the campus and had blocked the Rajshahi-Dhaka Highway protesting the incident.
