DU road crash: State must take care of victim's son, family demands

Family members of Rubina Akter, the woman who was killed in a road crash on Dhaka University campus on Friday, demanded that the state take responsibilities of the victim's school-going child Rohan.

The demand was raised today at Raju Memorial Sculpture where students of the university, under the banner of Nirapod Campus Chai, hosted a candlelight vigil.

The victim's family members participated in the programme.

Umme Salma Niha, the victim's niece, said, "I want justice for my aunt. My cousin has become an orphan. Neither his father nor his mother is alive now. There is no one to take care of him. The state must take his responsibility as the child has no one to bear his costs. The killer must be brought to book."

Jarin Jannat, an eyewitness of the accident, said, "The victim suffered so much pain before her death. I am a witness to it. She might not have died if the driver had stopped the car instantly."

On Friday, 45-year-old Rubina was killed as a private car hit a motorbike, causing her to fall. The car then dragged her for over a kilometre on the campus.

A former DU teacher was driving the car.
