Reminiscing Independence

In conversation with thespian Mamunur Rashid
mamunur rashid

Mamunur Rashid is no stranger to theatre aficionados and TV viewers, having been in the acting scene for many years. He is Aranyak's most noted thespian, and has toured the globe for various productions. He stands as an influential figure to many actors, who credit him for furthering their careers, or giving them that much needed stepping stone into the acting industry. For Independence Day, the actor hearkens back to a time of turmoil, change, and most markedly, triumph as he speaks to The Daily Star about his memories of the Liberation War. Excerpts:

“March is a fiery month, a revolutionary month, as a War had been fought and won. This is the month when all Bangladeshis, irrespective of age, must hold their heads up high.”

“Despite our victory, we must not forget the suffering and torment. March 25 is when the heinous night of terror took place, when the Pakistani military took innocent lives.”

“On March 7, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman instilled courage into our hearts with a cry for Independence and glory with his historic speech. He roused the downtrodden to take up arms and defend the lives of their people and their pride. It moved me too, and I set out to fight for my land.”

“If I look back on the events today, I'd still say there isn't a day more historically significant to Bangladesh. We are able to practice our traditions and be who we are today, because of our independence.”

“Along with the awakening of Bangladesh, this month brings forth a new life as the shriveled up leaves fall to the ground, making room for fresh, new greenery. This month will always hold a special fondness in my heart.”
