AL mayor candidate to be elected unopposed
One more Awami League-backed mayoral candidate, in Feni Sadar, is set to be elected unopposed after his lone opponent, a Jatiya Party-nominated candidate, withdrew his nomination yesterday.
Earlier, four AL mayor aspirants in Madaripur's Shibchar, Gopalganj's Tungipara, Feni's Parshuram, and Chandpur's Chengarchar municipalities had become all set to be elected unopposed in the December 30 municipality polls, as candidatures of their archrivals from the BNP were cancelled on different grounds.
If the appellate authorities, deputy commissioners of the districts, uphold the decisions of the returning officers, the Election Commission would have to declare the five AL mayor aspirants elected after the December 13 deadline for the candidacy withdrawal.
After the returning officer cancelled BNP-endorsed mayor candidate Fazlur Rahman Bakul's candidacy in Feni Sadar on Saturday, the first day of scrutiny of nomination papers, Jatiya Party's Mirza Mohammad Iqbal, became the lone rival for AL's mayor hopeful Haji Alauddin in the municipality.
Iqbal withdrew yesterday.
Returning Officer Mohammad Enamul Haque said Iqbal came to his office yesterday and applied for withdrawing his nomination.
Besides, three councillor hopefuls in ward-8 and -12 of Feni Sadar municipality withdrew their nomination yesterday. As a result, the AL-backed councillor candidates are set to get elected unopposed in the two wards as there are no other councillor candidates.
With the three councillor candidates' withdrawal, at least 36 AL-blessed councillor candidates in Feni are going to get elected uncontested.
Meanwhile, Sarwarul Abedin, a BNP-nominated candidate in Chengarchar municipality, appealed against the cancellation of his nomination paper. The hearing will be held on December 10 at the DC office in Chandpur.
