Govt forms 16-member panel on e-commerce

The government today formed a 16-member committee to recommend measures to discipline the e-commerce sector, according to an order by the commerce ministry.

The move comes in the face of public outcry for long delays in delivery of the goods by some digital platforms against advance payments and number of cases filed by some customers against Eorange and Evaly on allegations of embezzlement of buyers' funds.

The commerce ministry said the panel will recommend measures to resolve issues of dissatisfaction after transactions between buyers and sellers and address technical matters related to e-commerce.

With representatives from the private sector, the government formed the panel in line with the uprated version of the National Digital Commerce Policy 2020.

The 16-member committee will consist of senior officials from different ministries and government agencies, including Bangladesh Bank and law enforcing agencies.

The panel will be headed by the director general of the Central Digital Commerce Cell of  the commerce ministry.

It will sit for meeting at least once in a month and will suggest measures to the government time to time.
