Following the imposition of disciplinary probation against two students for drawing graffiti on September 4, 2024, inside the campus – which has since been withdrawn – students from the University of Liberal Arts (ULAB) blocked the main entrance of the campus yesterday. They demanded the resignation of ULAB Vice-Chancellor Imran Rahman, saying that he had "insulted the spirit of the July uprising". The demand for the VC's resignation was one of five demands that protesting students pressed for.

The demonstrations began yesterday, January 1, in the afternoon with students chanting slogans and drawing graffiti inside the campus. Around 4:30 PM, however, students blocked the entrance after the administration turned down their list of demands. The protests continued until around 11:50 PM that night when the students withdrew the blockade and allowed all the staff to leave.

The demands made by the protesting students include the resignation of the VC, removal of the trustee members who, as told by the students, 'collaborated with the fascist regime' and have been 'accused of corruption', resignation of all the members of the disciplinary committee and proctorial body as well as conceding to have taken anti-student decisions, logical reformation of the university's code of conduct based on input from all stakeholders including the students, and abolishment of all repressive provisions under the university's rules and regulations.

A day prior to the protests, the ULAB VC issued a message on the university's website, stating that the disciplinary probation had been withdrawn due to concerns expressed by some of the faculty members.

"Out of respect for them, and for the greater good of our students, we are withdrawing the disciplinary probation on the two students," the statement read.

At the time of writing, protesting ULAB students are staging a hunger strike demanding the VC's resignation.
