BUP Film Club, one of the leading clubs of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), concluded the "BUP Film Fest 2025" on February 2 at the university's campus.

The fifth edition of the BUP Film Festival celebrated the art of filmmaking with entries from 450 students across 40 universities in six different categories. The event concluded with 18 people winning awards in different categories including short film, script writing, documentary, ad making, cine quiz, and cosplay.

Mohin Rakaine, a recent graduate from Jatiya Kabi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU), was crowned the Champion in the "short film" category. While talking about his short film, Mohin said, "My short film titled A Snail Without Shell features a couple from the Garo community who anxiously waited for their grandchild who died in an incident in his line of work."

Sharing his experience with the film, Mohin added, "I shot the film for a whole week inside a Garo community village in Netrokona. With the whole post-production process, the film took about six months to complete – from script to film."

Md Sabbir, also a recent graduate from JKKNIU, received the Critics' Choice Award in the "documentary" category for his documentary titled The Drowning Land. "The documentary focuses on the devastating flood events of August 2024 in Bangladesh. I went there as part of a relief team and captured some footage. I made this documentary using over an hour of footage that I took during the relief efforts," said Sabbir.

A team of BUP Film Club received high praises from event guests, including Khawaja Naim Murad and Nusrat Imroz Tisha, for their short film Prohoson which was directed by Tanvir Ahammad Siddike, the General Secretary of BUP Film Club, who also handled the film's cinematography and editing.

With a production cost of just around BDT 5,000, Prohoson was made within a single day of shooting. Regarding his film – based on the events around the July revolution of 2024 – Tanvir said, "Prohoshon was a passion project made despite many challenges. With limited time and budget, our team gave their best to bring this one-shot film to life. We are grateful for the support and hope to tell more stories ahead."

Hearing about the budgetary constraints of the students in filmmaking, Major General Md Mahbub-ul Alam, the Vice Chancellor of BUP, made a commitment of giving BDT 1 lakh to the BUP Film Club for filmmaking, during his speech at the closing ceremony.

The two-day film festival also arranged two workshops featuring Tanim Noor, popular for his works like Phirey Esho Behula and Kaiser and EngageMedia, a nonprofit supporting digital rights, open technology, and social issue storytelling.

Adeeb Ayub, President of the BUP Film Club said, "Our club has gone through many ups and downs to reach where it is today. Although we were a little discouraged after the cancellation of the film fest last year, we did not lose hope. We tried our best and our moderator, Al Rakib sir, gave us full administrative support. The result is that we were able to organise the biggest film festival of the year. However, this pride does not belong to us, but to our partners, sponsors, and participants. They are the lifeblood of the fest. Without them, we are nothing."

Among others, BUP high officials, faculty members, and students were also present at the event.
