Beating woman dead in Badda: Prime accused arrested
The prime accused in a case filed over beating a woman to death in Badda was arrested from Narayanganj this evening.
The arrestee, Ibrahim Hridoy, 19, was a street vendor selling vegetables near Uttar Badda Government Primary School in the capital, reports our staff correspondent quoting Nazmul Hasan, assistant commissioner of Detective Branch (Dhaka East).
On information, police arrested Hridoy around 9:30pm, the official said.
Hridoy was identified from videos of the incident that went viral in social media and drew flak from all quarters.
Earlier on Monday, three other youths were held in connection with the incident from Badda.
On Saturday, Taslima Begum Renu, 40, a single mother of two, was beaten dead by a mob in the capital’s Badda around 8:30am when she went to Uttar Badda Government Primary School to ask about the admission process.
Her nephew Nasir Uddin Tito filed a case against 400 or 500 unknown people with Badda Police Station last night.
Locals told police that some locals thought that she was a child kidnapper and attacked her.
Videos taken on mobile phones and CCTV footages from nearby buildings show some youths kicking, striking and trampling the 40-year old woman, amid a gathering of several hundred people.
Most of the people seen in the video played the part of silent spectators when the mob descended upon Renu.
The incident comes a day after three people, including a woman, were beaten by a mob in Thakurgaon.
The Police Headquarters said it was aware of a rumour being spread about human sacrifices needed for the construction of Padma bridge, which may have led to the attacks.
“Lynching on suspicion is a criminal offence … Spreading rumours that destabilise the environment is an anti-state act,” it added.
