Most hospitals harm environ by treating medical waste as regular garbage

Dr MR Khan tells doctors' confce

Most of the hospitals are harming environment by draining medical wastage with other garbage without any process, which causes public health risk, said National Professor Dr MR Khan yesterday.

So the malpractice has to be stopped, he told the 8th National Conference of Doctors for Health and Environment.

The event titled "Let Advanced Physician Get Involved in Serving Humanity and Protecting Environment" was held in the capital's Bangladesh Medical Association auditorium.

To build up a government medical system beneficial to public, and to stand against "greedy" medical organisations, a unity of progressive minded doctors is most urgent, MR Khan said.

He stressed building up a service oriented treatment system.

At the event, late New Zealander physician Edric Baker, who served his life for the treatment of poor Bangladeshi people; and Dr Kazi Rabiul Haque, a social worker of Jessore, were honoured for their humanitarian works.

BMA President Prof Dr Mahmudul Hasan urged the young physicians to follow the ideals of Dr Edric Baker.

Language movement veteran Dr Ahmad Rafiq also addressed the programme which was chaired by Prof Nazmun Nahar, president of Doctors for Health & Environment.
