Pro-AL panel sweeps Duta polls
Pro-Awami League Blue Panel today swept the Dhaka University Teachers' Association (Duta) election.
The Blue Panel bagged 14 posts of the 15-member executive committee while its contestant pro-BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami White Panel got the only remaining post of an executive member.
Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed from Blue Panel was elected president for the fourth time defeating Prof Md Serazul Islam of White Panel. He got 917 votes while his rival bagged 457 votes.
Prof ASM Maksud Kamal won the general secretary post defeating Prof Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan of White Panel and independent candidate Sheikh Hafizur Rahman, who was aligned to Blue Panel. Prof Maksud got 866 votes while his rival Prof Siddique polled 374 votes.
Lutfor Rahaman, professor of statistics, biostatistics and informatics department, was elected as the lone executive member from White Panel.
From Blue Panel, Prof Shibli Rubayat ul Islam was elected treasurer, Pro-AL Associate Prof Neelima Akhter won the post of joint secretary and Prof Md Imdadul Hoque was elected vice president.
Prof Md Aftab Ali Shaikh, Prof Abu Jafar Md Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, Prof Md Ziaur Rahman, Prof Md Nizamul Hoque Bhuiyan, Prof Md Rahmat Ullah, Prof Sabita Rezwana Rahman, Associate Professor Chandra Nath Podder and Associate Professor Lafifa Jamal were elected members from the Blue Panel.
Prof Masudur Rahman, of marketing, is the only Blue Panel's member candidate to be defeated by the White Panel contender.
Prof Sharifullah Bhuyan, of history, conducted the election.
A total of 1,467 teachers out of 1,923 cast their votes at the university teachers' club between 10:00am and 2:00pm.
Last year the pro-AL panel won all 15 posts.
