Take legal action against SUV driver, HC tells cops
The High Court today ordered police to take legal actions against an underage driver, Fareez Rahman, in two weeks for hitting two rickshaws with an SUV in Gulshan, leaving four persons injured.
Though the October 12 created quite a stir in social media, neither the driver – who is the nephew of a former Awami League lawmaker – has been arrested nor any case has been filed yet.
The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Iqbal Kabir passed the order after hearing a public interest litigation filed by three lawyers – Aneek R Haque, Ali Bashar and Jyotirmoy Barua.
The bench further said a show cause notice will be served to the police if legal actions are not taken under the laws concerned.
The public interest litigation was filed with the High Court yesterday seeking trail of Fareez and adequate compensation for the victims.
Fareez was racing with another car on Gulshan street when the accident occurred, said a policeman who was close by at the time.
According to policemen present at the scene that day, Fareez had been drinking alcohol before the crash.
