Porimol gets life term for raping Viqarunnisa student
Porimol Joydhor, a teacher of Viqarunnisa Noon School, was sentenced to life term imprisonment for raping a class-X student in 2011.
Judge Saleh Uddin of Special Tribunal-4 under Women and Children Repression Prevention court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default to serve six months more in jail.
Victim's father filed the case against sacked teacher of the institution Porimol, the then principal Husne Ara Begum and chief of the school's Bashundhara branch Lutfur Rahman on July 5, 2011.
According to the case statement, Porimol, a Bangla teacher, violated the student at his coaching centre in the city's Badda twice. Husne Ara and Lutfur were discharged by the court during the charge hearing. The 59-year-old school plunged into trouble after the incident which sparked protests among students and guardians.
On November 10, Judge Saleh Uddin fixed today (Nov 25) for verdict delivery after hearing on that day.
Allegations are, he sexually assaulted one of his students twice in his Badda coaching centre in Dhaka in 2011. He was fired in July 5 that year in face of protests.
The victim’s family sued him on July 5, 2011 alleging rape and added that the then school branch’s in-charge Lutfur Rahman and Husne Ara of trying to cover up the incident.
Arrested within a day after the lawsuit, he later confessed of raping the student before a court on July 11. The news sparked anger and drew further protests.
On August 11 that year, police submitted charge sheet before the court, dropping the names of Hosne Ara and Lutfur Rahman.
On March 7, 2012, the court framed charges against Porimal. The trial formally started on June 6 that year and took over three years to come to an end.
