India's lockdown underway, death toll from coronavirus now 8
Amidst a lockdown across vast swathes of India, a 68-year-old Filipino, who had recovered after he was tested coronavirus positive, died in a hospital in Mumbai raising the death toll from coronavirus in India to eight.
The total number of confirmed cases rose to 390, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced concern that many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously. A separate statement issued by India's Information and Broadcasting Ministry warned of legal action against those violating the lockdown.
The Filipino man had initially tested positive for coronavirus and was under treatment at the Mumbai civic body-run Kasturba Hospital. He was later shifted to a private hospital after his test report came out negative, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said in a statement according to the correspondent.
He died at the private hospital late last night, it said. "He had diabetes mellitus and asthma and was admitted to the Kasturba hospital on March 13. He had developed acute renal failure and respiratory distress," the civic body said.
This is the third death reported from Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment hub, in connection with the coronavirus.
The total number of Covid-19 patients in the western state of Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai, rose to 89 with 15 more coronavirus positive cases reported in the last 24 hours, officials said today.
As 80 districts across India, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and IT hub Bengaluru, went under lockdown today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced concern that "many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously."
"Please save yourself, save your family, following the directives seriously," Modi said in a Twitter post in Hindi.
In India's most populous state (200 million) of Uttar Pradesh, 16 districts, including capital city Lucknow, will be locked down till Wednesday amid a spurt in coronavirus cases in the state.
Barring essential services, all government offices, educational institutes, autonomous bodies, business establishments, private offices, malls, shops, factories, go-downs and public transport will remain closed in these districts across India.
Movement of most trains, all metro trains and buses have been halted.
A lockdown will go into force across all urban and some rural areas of West Bengal from this afternoon after seven persons tested positive for coronavirus so far.
