1 killed, 50 injured in 5 municipal polls clashes
One person was killed and at least 50 injured in violent clashes and irregularities during voting in at least five municipalities out of ten that went to elections today.
Two people were jailed for casting fake votes and allegations of occupying polling centers, reports our correspondents from respective districts.
The 10 municipalities that went to polls today are--- Haragach in Rangpur, Kaliganj in Jhenidah, Jhalakati, Bhanga in Faridpur, Brahmanbaria, Nangalkot in Comilla, Kabirhat in Noakhali, Sonagazi in Feni, and Chakoria and Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar.
In Cox's Bazar, one person was killed and around 29 others said to have received bullet injuries as police opened fire to disperse a mob that attempted to occupy Ghonarpara Forkania Madrasa polling centre in Moheshkhali around 3:30pm.
The bullet injured Abdul Sukkur, 24, died on the way to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital around 5:30pm.
Scuffle, chase and counter chase among supporters of councilor candidates took places in four other polling stations in the Chakoria.
In Jhalakathi, at least fifteen people including ruling Awami League’s rebel mayoral aspirant Afzal Hossain were injured in clashes around 9:30am.
Elections in 234 municipalities, out of the country's 323, were held on December 30 last year in large chunk. Later, the Election Commission (EC) arranged polls in the remaining municipalities in scattered manner.
