Ferry stuck in hidden Padma shoal

A Ro-Ro ferry Ruhul Amin, carrying nine buses, two trucks and 11 small vehicles, ran aground in a hidden shoal in the middle of the Padma River this morning.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) authorities said its ferry Ruhul Amin ran aground in a hidden shoal at Louhajang turning point at dawn on its way to Kathalbari Jetty in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district from Shimulia Jetty in Munshiganj.

Another ferry, Shah Makhdum, which also ran aground in a hidden shoal in Padma has already left for its destination around 8:30am, they said.

Shah Newaj Khaled, assistant general manager (AGM) of BIWTC, said the BIWTA has conducted a survey on hidden shoals. Soon after submission of the survey report, dredging will start in the river to restore its navigability.
