Diaz’s mother on hunger strike at CU campus
Despite the alleged attempts by the Chittagong University authorities to foil the hunger strike by the mother of deceased BCL leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury today, she resumed her strike in front of the Shaheed Minar on the university campus.
A year into Diaz’s mysterious death, his mother Jaheda Amin Chowdhury started the hunger strike in front of Bangabandhu Chattar on the campus around 10:35am demanding arrest of the “killers” and the then Chittagong University Assistant Proctor Anwar Hossain Chowdhury.
At one point, a group of doctor and nurses of Chittagong University medical centre reached the spot with an ambulance and forcefully picked her up claiming she is ill, reports our CU correspondent from the spot.
As the ambulance stopped in front of the medical centre, Jaheda forcefully walked out and resumed the hunger strike until death in front of the university’s Central Shaheed Minar.
The university’s Registrar (acting) Professor Kamrul Huda was present during the time.
Last reported at 12:45pm, she was continuing the hunger strike on the spot.
Diaz, assistant secretary of the pro-Awami League student organisation, was found hanging in his residence near Gate No-2 of Chittagong University on the night of November 20, 2016. At that time, his family members were not present.
Neighbours first noticed the body through a window and informed police.
The family alleged that the body was hanged after he was killed. His cellphone was missing, they said.
His legs were touching the bed, arousing suspicion over whether it was a suicide, Enamul Haque Ovi, vice president of the CU unit of BCL, told media soon after the incident.
Diaz's mother Jaheda alleged that a teacher who holds an administrative post at CU and one of the top leaders of the unit of BCL masterminded the incident.
She said tender-related rivalry among BCL leaders led to the “murder”.
