Khaleda verdict: BGB deployed in Dhaka city, 14 dists
A total of 20 platoons Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been deployed in Dhaka city to avert any untoward incident ahead of tomorrow’s graft verdict of Khaleda Zia.
The BGB men were deployed at all strategic points in and around the capital around 6:00pm today and will remain active until 7:00am tomorrow, Soheli Ferdous, additional IG (media) of the Police Headquarters, told The Daily Star this evening.
The paramilitary force will be deployed again at 6:00pm tomorrow and will remain active until 7:00am on Friday, added the police official.
Besides, a total of 34 platoons of BGB will also be deployed in Chittagong tomorrow morning, Naima Islam, assistant commissioner and executive magistrate of Chittagong administration, told The Daily Star this evening.
Four platoons will be deployed in Chittagong city while 30 others will remain active in 15 upazilas of the district, she added.
Meanwhile, authorities have ordered the deployment of BGB personnel in 14 other districts of the country.
Mohsin Reza, public relation officer, BGB Headquarters, confirmed The Daily Star of the development, saying such measure was upon request of local authorities.
So far, till last reported, 23 platoons of the force -- three in Sirajganj, three in Bogra, three in Narayanganj, two in Pabna, Feni and Satkhira each, one in Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Pirojpur, Barisal, Natore, Bagerhat and Kishoreganj each -- have been deployed, said Mohsin Reza.
More platoons of BGB will be deployed if necessary, sources at the BGB Headquarters said.
Tomorrow, a special court will deliver a graft case verdict against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, amid widespread discussions of the political significance of the verdict and its aftermath.
