Mymensingh girl raped on bus, driver held

A 19-year-old girl was allegedly raped on a local bus by its driver in Nandail intersection area on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road in Mymensingh early today.

Police arrested the driver, Alamgir Hossain, who is a resident of Pumbail in Gouripur upazila of the district, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

The victim got on the Kishoreganj-bound bus at Ishwarganj upazila around 2:00pm yesterday. The girl was on her way to visit her brother, a garment worker in Narsingdi, Officer-in-Charge Md Ataur Rahman of Nandail Police Station said quoting the victim and locals.

When the bus reached Nandail in the evening, the driver suddenly suspended the trip. As it was not possible for the girl to reach Narsingdi or her Ishwarganj residence at night, the driver and conductors – Shahjalal and Mosharrof Hossain – of the bus assured her of helping reach Kishoreganj in the morning. They also gave her some snacks and told her to sleep inside the bus and the girl agreed, the OC described.

Around 12:30am, Alamgir entered the bus and raped the girl keeping Shahjalal and Mosharrof in guard, OC Ataur said quoting locals.

Hearing the screams of the victim, locals rushed to the spot and caught Alamgir red-handed. However, Shahjalal and Mosharrof managed to flee the scene, the OC said, adding that drives were on to nab the duo.

Alamgir was later produced before a Mymensingh court with a seven-day remand prayer. The court however did not hear the remand prayer today and sent Alamgir to jail, the OC informed.

The medical test of the girl is expected to be conducted at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital tomorrow, the police official said.
