Three people, including a garment worker, died of dengue today, bringing the unofficial death toll from the disease to 121 this year.

However, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed that only 52 patients died after being infected with the mosquito-borne disease at different hospitals in the country.

In Khulna, housewife Shahida Begum, 45, a resident of Pasharibunia village in Pirojpur’s Bhandaria died of dengue today.

Shahida was admitted to Bhandaria Upazila Health Complex with dengue fever on Sunday, M Belal Hossain, a physician of the health complex.

As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital where she died today, our Pirojpur correspondent reports quoting Belal Hossain.

In Mymensingh, 30-year-old Hafizul Islam, a garment worker, of Trishal upazila was infected with fever in Gazipur before Eid-ul-Azha and was admitted at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) on August 14.

He was diagnosed with dengue at the hospital and released after receiving treatment there for five days, said Atiqul Islam, a neighbour of Hafizul.

Hafizul fell ill seriously at his home and was again taken to the MMCH last night where doctors suggested to take him to Dhaka immediately but he died on the way around 3:00am, UNB reports quoting Dr Laxmi Narayan Majumdar, deputy director of the hospital.

In Dhaka, a man died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) this afternoon.

Ariful Islam, 34, hailing from Munshiganj, was declared dead at the DMCH around 2:30pm, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports citing the victim’s death certificate.

He had been suffering from fever since Saturday and admitted to a local hospital in Muradpur of Dhaka, said his relative Arafat Robi.

As Ariful was diagnosed with dengue, he was admitted to the DMCH this morning, the Bangla daily quoted Arafat as saying.

According to the DGHS, a record 67,221 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country till today.

A total of 1,157 patients -- 551 in Dhaka and the rest outside -- were admitted to hospitals throughout the country in 24 hours till 8:00am today.
