ASK concerned over Shafik Rehman’s arrest

Ain o Salish Kendra has expressed deep concern over the arrest and remand of senior journalist Shafik Rehman as "the process of the detention has created confusion among people".

If the law enforcers have specific evidence, they could have arrested Rehman following issuance of an arrest warrant against him by a court," the rights body said in a press release issued today.

"We hope that activities of the law enforcers won't create any confusion among the people that the government is trying to suppress the voice of opposition though repression," it added.

Hours after detectives detained him from his Eskaton residence, a Dhaka court yesterday placed Rehman, also a pro-BNP intellectual, on a five-day remand in a case for alleged attempts to abduct and murder prime minister's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
