Clash over football match leaves 15 hurt in Meherpur
At least 15 people were injured as people of two villages clashed over a football match at Govipur village in Meherpur Sadar upazila yesterday.
Meherpur Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said two teams--one from Govipur and the other from Shalika village took part in a friendly football match at Guchchhagram playground at Govipur on Monday.
At one stage, the match was postponed following an altercation between the supporters of the two villages over a decision by the match referee.
As a sequel to that, people of Govipur beat up a rickshaw-puller from Shalika while he was passing through the village around 10:30am.
Hearing the news, people of Shalika, quipped with lethal weapons, attacked Govipur village, triggering a clash between the people of the two villages that left 15 from both sides injured.
People of Shalika also damaged huge aman crop owned by the Govipur villagers.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 12 blank shots to bring the situation under control, the ASP added.
The injured are taking treatment secretly at different clinics and nearby upazila hospitals to avoid arrest, Meherpur Superintendent of Police Hamidul Alam said.
At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two associate bodies of the ruling Awami League in Bandarbazar City Super Market in Sylhet city on Monday evening, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.
Witnesses said the district and city units of Swechchhasebok League brought out a joint procession, protesting the day-long hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami.
When the procession reached in front of Bandarbazar City Super Market, supporters of the two groups locked in a clash over taking place in the front row of the procession, leaving 10 people from both sides injured.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
