‘Drug trader’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’
A suspected drug trader was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early today.
Deceased Md Russel Mahmud, 36, hailed from Uttar Lakshanghana of Narayanganj, was accused in two drug cases filed with Narayanganj Bandar Police Station.
Four police personnel – Sub Inspector of Teknaf Model Police Station Borhan Uddin Bhuiya, Habib Hossain, Sajib Sarker and Tuhin Hasan – were injured in the “gun battle”.
They were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, reports our Cox's Bazar correspondent quoting Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of the local police station.
Russel went to buy yaba pills from Amir Hamaja, an accused in arms and drugs related case, at Hoaikong in the upazila around 1:30am, when police were conducting a drive in the area, the OC said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the drug peddlers opened fire, forcing them to retaliate starting a “gunfight”, he added.
At one point, the drug peddlers fled the scene leaving bullet-hit Russel on the spot, he said.
Russel was rushed to the local health complex. Later, he was shifted to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered an LG gun, 5,000 pieces of yaba, five cartridges and nine bullet shells from the spot, he added.
