No bar to arrest Tangail-3 MP Rana
The Supreme Court today cleared the way for police to arrest Awami League lawmaker of Tangail-3, Amanur Rahman Khan Rana and his brother Shahidur Rahman Khan in the Faruk Ahmed murder case.
The Appellate Division of the SC scraped a High Court order that on July 14 directed Amanur and Shahidur to surrender before the lower court and ordered the law enforcers not to harass or arrest them in two weeks within the case.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana passed the order after hearing an appeal filed by the government against the HC order.
Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar to arrest Amanur and Shahidur in the Faruk murder case following the SC order.
The bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader, was found on January 18, 2013. Later, a murder case was filed against the crime. Police have found evidence of involvement of Amanur and his three brothers in the murder, according to a report published in the Bangla daily Prothom Alo on September 14 last year.
Fearing arrest or harassment, Amanur and Shahidur in July this year moved a petition before the HC seeking anticipatory bail in the case.
