Plea seeks judicial inquiry into Tangail firing

A rights organisation today moved a writ petition before the High Court seeking its order upon the government to conduct a judicial inquiry into the Tangail firing incident that left four persons dead.

Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association (BNWLA) filed the petition, saying that investigation into the incident may not be fair as police are involved with it.

If a judicial inquiry is conducted, the responsible persons will be found, the organisation said in the petition.

After a brief hearing, a HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Zafar Ahmed fixed September 30 for further hearing on the petition.

The court asked the petitioners’ lawyers Fawzia Karim Feroz to place before the court by September 30 the laws relevant to holding judicial inquiry into an incident.

Attorney General appeared for the state today.  

The BNWLA filed the petition three day after four people were shot dead and 32 injured in Kalihati upazila of Tangail as police opened fire during a clash with locals. The fourth victim died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.

Hundreds of locals took to the streets on Friday afternoon protesting September 15's brutal assault of a mother and her son. A clash erupted when police intercepted the demonstration.
