2 ‘robbers’ killed in ‘gunfight’
Two alleged robbers were killed in separate incidents of what law enforcers described as gunfight in Laxmipur and Bagerhat today.
In Laxmipur, the victim was identified as Abdus Jahed, 35, from Chandraganj and the prime accused in the murder of a local Awami League leader Md Omar Faruque, our local correspondent reports.
Jahed, alias ‘Dhama Kalu’, was also convicted in numerous other murder cases, reports a Bangla daily Prothom Alo. He was killed in “gunfight” with police.
Police cracked down on a group of robbers during preparation of a heist, said Shah Shafiul Rahman, police superintendent of the district. “Sensing the cops, the robbers opened fire. Police fired back.”
Jahed was later found lying dead on the spot. Five police men were injured in the incident, and bullets were recovered from the spot.
In Bagerhat, Akkas alias Rahim alias Jamai, 25, from Patharghata of Barguna, was killed in “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), reports our local correspondent.
He was allegedly the ringleader of a robbery gang locally known as Sagor Saikat Bahini, Major Adnan Kabir, deputy commander of Rab-8, said.
A Rab patrol team under the attack at Amgachhiya khal (lake) in Sharankhola range of the Sundarbans around 5:30am, he said. “Retaliation shots were fired”.
Later the dead body of Akkas was found lying in the spot. About 15 firearms and bullets were recovered from the spot.
