Sand lifting: Jubo League leader among 5 jailed in N’ganj
A mobile court today sent five people including a Jubo League leader to jail for illegally lifting sand from Meghna River at Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj.
The mobile court led by Ujjal Hossain, an executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) in the upazila, came up with the order during a drive this afternoon, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
The convicts are: Abdus Sattar, 35, secretary of Kalapahariya union Jubo League; Nabi Hossain, 25; Kamal Hossain, 30; Aziz Mia, 40; and Mohammad Ali, 30.
The mobile court conducted the drive against illegal sand lifting from the Meghna River with help of police, Khagakanda naval police and upazila administration from this morning till 5:00pm, the executive magistrate said.
During the drive, a dredger and a bulkhead were seized and the Jubo League leader and four workers were held for lifting sand from the river without permission, he said.
Abdus Sattar was sentenced to three months in prison while the other four detainees were sentenced to one month imprisonment each, the official added.
