Grammys 2022: Who won on music’s biggest night?
The 64th Grammy Awards was a night of wonder and as pointed out by host Trevor Noah, a concert where awards are doled out and people's names are kept out of people's mouths. It was an intentional jab at Will Smith infamously slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Jon Batiste's lyrically evocative "We Are" won Album of the Year while Silk Sonic won Record and Song of the Year for their hit song "Leave the Door Open". As expected, Olivia Rodrigo bagged the award for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. However, the talk of the town is not about her big wins but her surprise cameo during BTS's exuberant performance of their massive hit "Butter". Although singer J-Hope and Jungkook faced minor slip-ups during the performance, they recovered effortlessly. Rodrigo performed her hit single - one of the biggest earworms of the past year - "Driver's License" and also won Best Pop Solo Performance for this song.
Doja Cat and SZA scored a memorable win with their Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award. It was a big night for H.E.R. as she won Best Traditional R&B Performance award and delivered a soaring rendition of "Are You Going to Go My Way", accompanied by iconic guitarist Lenny Kravitz, and Travis Barker on drums.
Lil Nas X entertained with a rousing medley of his biggest hits while Lady Gaga sang a duet with Tony Bennett from their latest album "Love for Sale". Justin Bieber gave a stilted performance of the feel-good pop song "Peaches" and Billie Eilish belted out a touching rendition of "Happier Than Ever".
Arooj Aftab became the first Pakistani artiste to win a Grammy. She took home the prestigious trophy for her song "Mohabbat" in the Best Global Performance category.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a surprising appearance to ask for support from everyone during these unfortunate times. It was followed by a poignant performance from John Legend, who shared the spotlight with Ukrainian singer Mika Newton, musician Siuzanna Igidan and poet Lyuba Yakimchuk to sing "Free," and give a visual salute to Ukraine.
During the In Memoriam segment, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was honoured along with musical legend Stephen Sondheim.
