Runa Laila’s voice is a gift from God: Sabina Yasmin
Runa Laila is a legendary name in the Bangladeshi music industry. Her fame is not only limited to Bangladesh, but extends all the way across our subcontinent. Through her timeless hits, she has won over the hearts of millions of people.
In 2015, the artiste reached a massive landmark, having been in the industry for 50 years, having sung over 10,000 songs. Aside from singing in Bangla, Runa has also earned praise for singing in other languages.
Today, November 17, marks the legendary artistes' 70th birthday. On the special occasion, Sabina Yasmin, another famous singer from Bangladesh, spoke to The Daily Star about the legacy and success of Runa Laila.
When asked about how she met Runa, Sabina said, "So many years have passed, that I don't exactly remember when and where I first met Runa Laila. What I do remember is that we sang a duet, composed by Debu Bhattacharya. Possibly, the film for which we sang the duet, was never released."
"However, a few days later, we would once again sing another song—together—for a movie. This song received a lot of love from the people and they still listen to it, even today. That song is 'Tumi Boro Vaggoboti'. It is a song with a wonderful melody and extraordinary lyrics," continued Sabina.
Talking about Runa and her illustrious career, Sabina shared, "If I start talking about Runa Laila, there are endless things to say. Her achievements are massive and she herself is one of the biggest artistes in our country. I would say that she is a living legend of Bangladesh."
"Aside from singing in movies, we have also performed together on stage. I have many fond memories of the two of us, together on stage, singing. Whenever she would perform on the stage, she would put people into a trance with her magical voice. Her voice was so powerful, yet melodic. She left millions of people awestruck through her wonderful songs. Runa Laila's voice is a gift from God," said Sabina.
Discussing the legacy of Runa Laila, Sabina noted emotionally, "One day, all of us will have to leave. But the work and art we leave behind, will always be here. Because of the legacy she has created, she will forever be remembered by the people. I hope and pray that Runa Laila remains with us for many more years and sings even more songs that capture our hearts."
"Today is Runa Laila's birthday. So, I give my best wishes to this wonderful artiste, who has touched so many of our lives. My heart and mind are filled with love for her," concluded Sabina.
