Sultan at Birth Centenary committee: Honouring SM Sultan’s century of artistry
Bangladesh is gearing up for a momentous celebration – the 100th birth anniversary of one of its most iconic and pioneering artists, SM Sultan. Sultan's artistic influence remains a source of inspiration for audiences worldwide. To commemorate the milestone, a new committee has been formed recently, titled "Sultan at Birth Centenary: National and International Celebration Committee". It promises a series of events to pay tribute to the legendary figure.
Born on August 10, 1923, Sheikh Mohammed Sultan, known as SM Sultan, holds a unique place in the annals of Bangladeshi art history. His remarkable journey from a small village in Narail to becoming one of the country's most celebrated artists is a testament to his exceptional talent and unyielding passion for art. His distinctive style, characterised by bold strokes and a focus on rural life and its people, earned him both national and international acclaim.
The Sultan at Birth Centenary committee comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds, including visual artists, journalists, war veterans, art critics, photographers, architects, filmmakers, educators, researchers, poets, writers, curators, students, cultural figures, and art organizers. This inclusive approach is a reflection of Sultan's wide-reaching influence and the admiration he garnered from all walks of life.
The committee, led by esteemed artist Shahabuddin Ahmed as the adviser, distinguished artist Monirul Islam as the convener, and acclaimed portrait photographer Nasir Ali Mamun as the member secretary, has set forth an ambitious plan to celebrate Sultan's centenary. Over the next two years, a series of events will unfold, offering a comprehensive tribute to the artist's life and work.
The assembly intends to host a diverse array of activities as part of their celebration. These activities include exhibitions of Sultan's artwork, lectures on his profound influence, commemorative events, publications, seminars, workshops, and art-centric events catered to children. The overarching objective is to safeguard Sultan's legacy and ensure it continues to motivate forthcoming generations.
SM Sultan's life and art were inseparable from the cultural fabric of Bangladesh. He was not only an artist but also a cultural icon, earning the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 1982 and the Independence Day Award in 1993.
