Hollywood documentary features Bangladesh Bank heist
The new documentary from Universal Picture's Home Entertainment recounts the 2016 heist committed by hackers, who stole USD 81 million from the Bangladesh Bank reserves, while also accidentally leaving a typo that kept them from escaping with more.
Directed by Daniel Gordon, "Billion Dollar Heist" looks back at how hackers were able to use the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication banking system — the messaging network banks across the world use to execute transfers between one another — to illegally move USD 101 million from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to an account at the Bangladesh Bank.
Through different interviews with cybersecurity specialists, the documentary illustrates how intricate and common cybercrime has become in recent years. According to the trailer, organized cybercrime creates the same amount of threat for humanity as any other calamities like Pandemics, climate change or weapons of mass destruction.
"Billion Dollar Heist" will be released in the US on August 15.
