Langur beaten to death in Patuakhali
A gray langur was beaten to death by villagers in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali last evening.
After locals notice the monkey on a tree at the house of one Siddique Khan in North Amkhola village, they informed Animal Lovers of Patuakhali yesterday afternoon.
The organisation members visited the spot and advised people not to harm the animal, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.
Being informed, local forest officials also visited the spot, but could not catch it as it was sitting on the top of the tree.
But when the langur came down from the tree in the evening, villagers attacked it with sticks, leaving the primate dead on the spot. Later, the body was buried.
Baijid Munshi, a member of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali, said, "Even though we went to the spot and talked to the locals, they killed the langur. It is very sad. We demand legal action in this regard."
Nayan Mistry, range officer of Patuakhali Forest Division, said the body was recovered from the spot at night. After investigation, legal action will be taken against those who killed the primate, Nayan said.
