High Court cautions lawyer Eunus Ali for his ‘conduct’

Md Eunus Ali Akond

The High Court today cautioned Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond for his "conduct" with the court at different times.

"Mr Eunus Ali Akond, you submit petitions before this court at different times, but you remained absent during their hearings. Besides, you sent message to lawyers with making various comments about the court. You have become an aged person. Be careful," the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir said.

The bench, however, exempted Eunus Ali from a Tk 10,000 fine imposed by it on May 5 for not appearing before the court after filing a writ petition challenging the legality of lockdown.

The HC bench virtually passed the exemption order following a separate application filed by Eunus Ali expressing regrets for his "mistake".

Deputy Attorney General Arobinda Kumar Roy represented the state during the court proceedings.

On May 5, the same HC bench imposed Tk 10,000 as fine on Eunus Ali for not appearing before it after filing a writ petition challenging the legality of "ongoing lockdown".

The bench also dismissed the writ petition for "default", saying that Eunus Ali very often files writ petitions as public interest litigation and briefs the media about them, but he does not appear before the court during the hearing.

On October 12 last year, the Appellate Division of Supreme Court barred lawyer Eunus Ali from practicing law before both its Appellate and High Court Divisions for three months for committing contempt of court by posting three derogatory comments about the judiciary on his Facebook.
